Does Solar Work in the Snow?

January 28, 2019

One of the most common questions we are asked at New York State Solar Farm is: “Will my SunPower solar panels work when covered with snow?” The answer is, yes, they will. Today while walking into the office, I realized our system here was fully covered in snow. About a half inch layer of ice on top of about 5” of snow. So, I figured, what better time to show you our system that we are reliant on at New York State Solar Farm for power. Yes, the power the system was producing was very, very little, but the fact that it was still producing is incredible. The reason for this is that we used high quality solar panels possessing a SunPower cell technology called “Maxeon.” SunPower solar cells create world record efficiency, which allows them to work in very low light conditions. The unique, patented technology of SunPower Equinox cells has perfected the art of capturing far more light than that of conventional cells.
